I want to purchase an ipad but dont want to have to pay for 3g every month. is it achievable to get a 3g ipad and in no way get any contract at all? I want to use the wi-fi only sometimes is this doable?

No such thing as iPad with a contract. It is only per month. Only cause for a contract is if the value is subsidized.
