I cannot appear to locate an actual answers to this, as all the specifications are BS and consist of the black border which is not part of the screen.
The official Apple specs (http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) list it as Height: 9.56 inches, Width: 7.47 inches, and a 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen.
The dilemma is if you calculate the diagonal from the listed Length an Width it comes to 12.1 inches diagonally!? Any person know the actual Length an Width of the screen?

Why are you so desperate to know? It is 9.7 inches just like it says. It's measured diagonally. The dimensions you identified are of the device itself, not the screen.
