What is the future for hand-held consoles?

Question by : What is the future for hand-held consoles?
I am honestly disappointed with the lack of progress there has been in the field of portable gaming. Nintendo has ultimately failed as the DS has been out for many years now, but the capability of the device is minimal at very best. the PsP was a step in the appropriate direction, but far more initiatives require to be taken as to increase controls, capability, and graphics. Apple is so far the leading competitor in this field with iPod/iPhone/iPad systems, but the touch-screen controls can at times be very challenging to use compared to physical controls simply because you have to watch the screen and the controls so your hands don't stray from the "control location" and render your movements useless, but the gyroscope does make for interesting developments (specifically in games like Galaxy on Fire where it is an amazing feature).

So what is the future of portable gaming? Will Apple continue to lead the field regardless of gaming not even be their major concern? Will Microsoft or Sony step it up and take the field with long strides? Or will we see Nintendo finally trash the Wii and move on to a new generation of Gameboys?
edit: a response to posts -
The DS is a gameboy, it is the last gameboy, it does not have to be the final gameboy.
PSVita is wonderful, I haven't heard about it, but I'm glad a person brought it to my attention due to the fact I will be watching it from now on and see if it is worth getting. (I monitor gaming news not completely, but I usually know what is coming out and what individuals thought of other games).
The Wii is a horrible console for gamers not for households, but for gamers. Wii U is trying to fix a device that is not meant for gamers, not to make it for gamers.
The iPhone/iPad/iPod touch from Apple are top the hand held gaming market since of the capabilities that go along with it, the accelerator, and the shear capacity of the device is brillaint (Infinity Blade I/II are merely gorgeous and wonderful).
