Why do iPad "slide/move" it screen when its only your finger?

Question by : Why do iPad "slide/move" it screen when its only your finger?
Its only your finger that can make your iPad and iPhone scroll down, slide and move the screen.
How do they do it? How did Steve Job make that occur.
I tried undertaking it with a pen (closed), a non-sharp toothpick.... nothing appear to move the screen except your finger... why is that?

Most contemporary touch screens use "capacitive touchscreen" which you can read about at length Right here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#Capacitive
It implies that the circuit will not connect if you do not use your finger~
